Born in Trinidad, Cuba, Alexandre Arrechea (@alexandrearrechea), graduated from Havana’s Instituto Superior de Arte and was a founding member of “Los Carpinteros,” a Cuban artist collective renowned for challenging the boundaries of functionality and frivolity. In 2003 Arrechea embarked on his solo career, developing conceptual art that delves into socio-political themes. His diverse multimedia repertoire has garnered global acclaim. A global artist of the twentieth century, Wifredo Lam fused elements from established concurrent artistic movements with Caribbean, African and Oceanic themes to create a style that was discernibly unique. Born on December 8, 1902 in Sagua la Grande, Cuba, to a Chinese father and Spanish/Congelese mother, Lam felt a deep connection with Caribbean culture and Afro-Cuban spiritual practices that were introduced to him by his godmother, Matonica Wilson, who was a Santería priestess. Carlos Alfonzo (b. 1950, Havana, Cuba – d.1991, Miami, FL) was a trailblazing figure whose creative contributions significantly shaped Miami’s role as a hub of artistic influence. As a prodigious talent formalizing his practice in Cuba under Castro’s Communist Regime, Alfonzo attended the Academia de Bellas Artes, San Alejandro, where he earned a degree in Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking in 1973.
