Exile as Transformation
The Body in Abstraction:
Cárdenas, Fernández and Soriano
This exhibition brings together three Cuban artists—𝗔𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁í𝗻 𝗖á𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘀, 𝗔𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁í𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗻á𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘇, and 𝗥𝗮𝗳𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗼—whose lives and practices were profoundly shaped by exile. Through sculpture and painting, the exhibition traces how exile reshaped their visual vocabularies—from Cárdenas’ totemic forms, to Fernández’s charged, corporeal surfaces, to Soriano’s luminous, spiritual expanses. Together, their works offer a powerful meditation on estrangement and resilience, revealing how the rupture of exile can give rise to new forms of emotive visual expression.
