Territories of the Seen and Unseen

Landscape has traditionally suggested a view outward, yet a landscape is never simply what lies before us. It is also what we remember, what we build, what we alter, what we leave behind, and what we carry within ourselves. Inspired in part by John Berger’s writings on art, landscape, and the act of seeing, SCAPES considers landscape not as a fixed genre, but as a field of experience shaped by perception, history, memory, and human presence.

Bringing together artists across generations and media, the exhibition moves between natural and built environments, figuration and abstraction, physical territory and interior space.

Questions of exile, migration, and displacement further complicate these territories. For several artists, place exists as lived reality and remembered experience, transformed by absence, longing, and time over time. Rather than asking simply, “What is a landscape?” the exhibition considers a more expansive question: Where does landscape end?
