The Path to the Volcanoes
A solo exhibition by William Osorio
July 5 – August 3, 2024
The Path to the Volcanoes is a body of work in which William Osorio illustrates the most recent mass exodus of Cubans – triggered as a direct consequence of the Cuban Regime’s assault on Civil Liberties during and after the protests of July 2021 throughout the island.
Each work within the series is painted through the artist’s iconic style of canvas sewn to rug, while simultaneously integrating textiles, personal items and garments used by travelers throughout the journey. Osorio’s choice of materials is a small act of protest, liberating the paintings from the traditional bounds of a stretcher and allowing the texture to overflow within the work, adding a corporal essence that dissolves the barrier between viewer and subject.
The compositions found within The Path to the Volcanoes, are mirrors of moments throughout the journey, as Osorio utilizes photographic material captured by fellow Cubans on their path through Nicaragua to the United States border as direct references. The message of these works is not isolated the struggle of thousands of Cubans and their families – rather they are a testament to the story of exile and displacement experienced by millions of people around the world.
