Tim Buwalda

Tim Buwalda (b. 1975, West Palm Beach, Florida) employs his formal training as an artist to see the effect of color, line, and shape as vehicles to question the fragility of reality. Specializing in photo-based realism, through his intensive process recognizable images are reduced to microcosm of abstract color field paintings in the facets of bent metal, tropical foliage, or urban architecture that make up his chosen compositions. The scenes of each work directly disrupt the certainness with which we move through life introducing the unexpected through binaries of creation & destruction, realism & abstraction, and past & future.

Buwalda studied at the University of Tennessee in the city of Chattanooga and later graduated with a BFA from New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. His work forms part of the permanent collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami (Miami, FL) and Institute of Contemporary Art of Miami (Miami, FL).
